You Are The Light Of The World [Matthew 5]

14"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5 is an amazing chapter beginning with a list of those who are blessed. According to Jesus, the rich and famous, the most religious, the good looking, etc aren't those who are blessed. It is the humble people who live honestly and fervently for God in their spiritual poverty who will be blessed. These are the ones who know they are nothing and exchange that nothing for God's grace and blessings each day.

Matthew 5 ends with Jesus' interpretation of some of God's laws making the standard even higher than it was before. Jesus gave a standard so high that none of us could keep to it. But praise God that Jesus died to enable you to not only live according to the law by His grace, but when you do, you will stand out like a light in a dark place. And by your good works of God's grace, God will be glorified in your life (see verses above).

May you embrace your poverty and humbly go to God each day and exchange your darkness for His light so the world may through your good works, glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Love that Jesus said he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. Then He brings the standard even higher, with the highlight being -be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect. Yes, He did fulfill it.
