10 Generations of Man [Genesis 5]

Genesis 5

1This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.

2He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created.

The first 10 generations of man from the creation of Adam until the death of Noah spanned 2006 years. Then, from the birth of Noah's son, Shem, to Abraham was another set of 10 generations, but covered only 565 years. Those first 10 generations of man lived a remarkably long time and apparently, God wanted us to take note of them because He placed them in order with the family line and life spans. But there were many who were left out of this family history. Cain, for example didn't make the cut. There were no women listed and then there was the remarkable life of Enoch who was there one day and gone the next because God took him. This chapter ends with Noah, a man of God that played a critical part in God's story, a story we will read in the next several days.

God, it is clear that You have paid attention to Your creation and particularly to the people You have created. We praise You for recording these individuals and every day of their lives that were numbered by You. We need You to give us wisdom and insight to wrap our minds around who You are and how You permeate all of life and history with Your presence. We can't, but You can!
