God Is God! [Job 34]

¹²"Surely, God will not act wickedly,
         And the Almighty will not pervert justice.
¹³"Who gave Him authority over the earth?
         And who has laid on Him the whole world?
¹⁴"If He should determine to do so,
         If He should gather to Himself His spirit and His breath,
¹⁵All flesh would perish together,
         And man would return to dust.

Elihu continued his discourse by questioning Job's words concerning God. Then, he explained that God is God with the inference that we are not God. God can do whatever He wants, but His character is righteous and it is He who keeps every living being alive. Elihu has a sense of the enormity of God and how silly Job is to justify himself before the Almighty God.

A friend asked me a great question yesterday. He asked me, "What is God's mission?" After thinking for only a few seconds, I answered that God is a seeker who seeks and saves man. My friend explained that God's seeking is part of His mission, but what motivates God to seek? Finally, he told me that he believes God's mission is to glorify Himself. I immediately agreed that he had a much better answer than I did. In the Old Testament, glory means weightiness. The picture is that of a scale and God by far outweighing all the things we count as valuable or precious. The New Testament word for glory means correct opinion. Therefore, when God glorifies Himself, He reveals His weightiness, his extremely precious value and shows us a correct opinion of who He is.

We have a mission, too. That is to glorify God and to enjoy Him. To do that we have to study Him and spend time with Him. Apparently, Elihu had spent time getting to know God and as a result he could hear what was wrong and correct Job and his friends with the truth about God.

We praise You, God, that You do make Yourself available to be known by us! Cause us to keep growing in knowledge and intimacy with You. Cause us to believe that You are the most precious and valuable One in the universe and that we can call You Abba because of Jesus. May we glorify You by Your grace.
