Remembering the Rock of Our Refuge [Isaiah 17-18]

10For you have forgotten the God of your salvation
And have not remembered the rock of your refuge.

Damascus is the capital of modern day Syria. It is one of the oldest cities with a 4000 year history. This ancient city is situated a mere 135 miles northeast of Jerusalem and was the home of the Arameans. The name of this city is woven throughout various Old Testament stories. In addition, Paul encountered Christ on the road to Damascus. It was became a part of the Assyrian Empire, the Babylonian Empire, the Medo-Persian Empire, the Greek Empire and the Roman Empire. Although, Damascus is currently a thriving city, we know it will not remain so because of the pride of forgetting God.

Forgetting God is easy. It gets easier as we prosper and gain status like the famous ancient city Damascus. In contrast, remembering God does not come easy. The New Testament Greek word for remember means to exercise the mind. Remembering is like exercise. It takes time, discipline and a daily commitment. It is only by God's grace (power) that we can keep God at the heart of our thoughts and lives and avoid the ruin that comes with forgetting God.

We praise You, God, that Jesus died and saved us and that we are your eternal children. We praise you that you are the God of our salvation and the rock of our refuge each and every moment of our lives. Cause us, by Your powerful grace, to remember You each day and to grow in trusting You so that our lives will reflect Your character and not end up in the ruins of pride. We can't, but You can!
