8They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9Then the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?"
10He said, "I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself."
I can relate to how Adam and Eve must have felt. I remember when I was about 10 years old in the Lord I was still feeling shame about certain things I did and regularly withdrew from my relationship with God. On those days, I couldn't bring myself to read my Bible or even to pray. Obviously, my understanding of God wasn't well developed even though I had been teaching Bible studies for some years. Now I know to go to Him with my sin and weakness and exchange them for His grace. What a difference that has made in my life. Those issues that used to cause me to withdraw from God have been dealt with in the power of His grace... something that could never have happened without a better understanding of God and His powerful grace.
From these few verses, right here at the beginning of the Bible we see so much about the character of God. First, he cared about Adam and Eve and looked for them to spend time with them. He knew where they were, what they had done and why they were hiding, but He called to the man and let the man answer questions stating his location and why he was hiding and eventually, what they had done. God was so compassionate and gentle in the way he exposed the sin. Even though God hates sin, He loves us!
