Intimacy in the Tent of Meeting [Exodus 34]
9Whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent; and the LORD would speak with Moses. 10When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent. 11Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
I remember the first year that I read through the whole Bible which was about 16 years ago. It was a new experience because I was reading with the view of looking for how God describes Himself - the things He wants me to know about Himself. When I got to this passage I was envious of Moses. I wanted what Moses had. I wanted the intimacy with God in the tent where "the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend." Isn't this what my heart has always longed for? The rest of the chapter confirmed this longing as God spoke words of comfort to Moses, "I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight." v. 12. If only God would say those words to me...
What I didn't know then and I do now is that this is exactly what God wants for me. He gave me something even greater than Moses when He gave me Jesus. Now I have His own Spirit living within me (my tent) who groans for me and desires to minister those same words, only personalized especially for me, to my heart. As I have grown in communing with Him I have had Exodus 33 moments where I pour out my heart to the Lord and He pours into my heart the truth of His delight and favor. And He calls me by name, What could be sweeter?
Father, Abba, Daddy, Shepherd, Vine, You are truly the One who desires intimacy with us. It is how You designed us. We praise You for the sweetness of intimacy with You through Your Spirit who lives in us. We were bought with a price so that You could be the life within us. Thank You Jesus for paying that price.
